I agree wholeheartedly with Joel that alternative medicine gets to the core of health problems much better than medical doctors who focus more on symptom relief. Two excellent Columbus Dispatch articles on natural healing appeared in the 10-12-03 newspaper. Apparently, more and more people are becoming fed up with taking prescription drugs. Surveys show that about one-third of patients use alternative therapies, and about 70 percent of those don’t tell their doctors. Below is more from the “Nature’s Healing Touch” Accent section of the Dispatch.

About 1,500 naturopaths practice in the United States. Naturopaths look at the whole person to try to figure out how to make the body well. Naturopaths test blood, saliva, hair and stool samples. In some states with licensing procedures, they also perform invasive surgeries, such as wound stitching, and offer help during childbirth.

Naturopathic medicine is based on the following principles:

· Encourage the healing power of nature by applying natural therapies.
· Treat the underlying causes of diseases, not the effects.
· Recognize the whole person by considering physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, genetic and environmental factors.
· Motivate the patient to take responsibility for his or her health.
· View prevention as the best cure.
· Do no harm.

Options

Alternative therapies play a part in American health care, according to surveys of patients and physicians.

Almost 90 percent of the primary-care physicians and obstetric-gynecologic clinicians in a California health-maintenance organization had recommended at least one alternative therapy—primarily for the management of pain.

And, in another survey, about half of the California women of various ethnic groups with breast cancer had tried at least one such therapy, and about a third had tried two types.

In general, younger women of higher income and education levels who exercise are more likely to use alternative therapies.

During a recent K-Talk radio interview with host Tom Draschil, Joel discussed the dangers of vaccines. He also stressed how important it is to avoid sugars if you want to keep your immune system strong and healthy. Of all the foods consumed today, refined sugar is considered to be the most harmful. Refined sugar is more like a drug than it is a food. Dr. David Reuben, author of EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT NUTRITION, says, "White refined sugar is not a food. It is a pure chemical extracted from plant sources, purer in fact than cocaine, which it resembles in many ways. Its true name is sucrose and its chemical formula is C12H22O11. It has 12 carbon atoms, 22 hydrogen atoms, 11 oxygen atoms, and absolutely nothing else to offer."

The chemical formula for cocaine is C17H21NO4. Sugar's formula again is C12H22O11. For all practical purposes, the difference is that sugar is missing the "N", or nitrogen atom.

You can read more about why sugar is so harmful at:

A senior executive at Europe’s largest drug maker has admitted most prescription medicines don’t work for most people, it is reported. Allen Roses, of GlaxoSmithKline, is quoted in a national newspaper as saying more than 90% of drugs only work in 30-50% of people . . . Most drugs had an efficacy rate of 50% or lower.

An ingredient in garlic may offer one of the best defenses against hospital superbugs, research shows. The compound is said to be effective even against highly resistant strains of the notorious MRSA bug, which has claimed many lives. Tests by Dr. Ron Cutler, a microbiologist, showed it can cure patients with MRSA-infected wounds "within days", he said. Allicin, which occurs naturally in garlic, not only killed known varieties of MRSA, but also new superbug generations resistant to "last-resort" antibiotics such as vancomycin. The findings will be published in the Journal of Biomedical Science in the new year. More at:

How Smokers 'Harm Healing'
People who live with smokers find that their cuts and grazes take longer to heal and are more likely to leave scars, according to a study. Researchers have shown that the body's "healing cells" move slower to the site of an injury if they are exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke. The preliminary study, at the University of California, studied the effects of smoke on fibroblasts, cells that play a key role in wound healing. More at

Best Medical Treatment Often No Treatment At All
The biggest myths of modern medicine were challenged in a new guide for patients launched yesterday that sets out the best treatment for 60 of the commonest medical conditions. Instead of claiming miracles, the guide admits that often the best treatment is no treatment. Devised by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), it is based on evidence from thousands of research studies and is being made available through the NHS Direct website, the advice service for patients. Alternative medicine gains ground

In 2002, more than one-third - 36 percent - of American adults tried herbal treatments, meditation, chiropractic therapy, acupuncture, diets or some other nontraditional care, according to a study of 31,000 people. If prayer for health is included as an alternative treatment, the number soars to 62 percent, according to the survey released last month by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
