"The Energy Non-Crisis," by Lindsey Williams, Wheatridge, co: Worth Publishing, 1980
Williams was Chaplain to the North Slope of Alaska in 1972-1974 during construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
Being there at his own expense, the oil companies compensated him by affording him executive status and priviliges. He became friendly not only with the workers on the pipeline, but with many of the oil company executives.
He was witness to the strenuous efforts by both Federal and Alaska state governments to impede construction of the pipeline and prevent the flow of oil.
From its initial construction estimate of $600 million, strangling regulations and continual obstruction by state and federal agents caused the cost to balloon first to $2 billion and, finally to $12 billion!... which costs were passed on to us at the gas pump.
Williams came to realize that the government was trying to bankrupt the oil companies, to discredit them in the minds of the American people as a prelude to nationalization of the oil industry.
He became privy to figures that showed that the one small 100-acre area where the oil companies were allowed to drill would produce 2 million barrels per day, which was verified when the oil finally started to flow.
Also revealed is the discovery of another great pool of oil under Gull Island that was reliably estimated at another 2 million barrels per day. This, in addition to the amount already flowing today from Prudhoe Bay would be enough to make the United States independent of foreign oil.
(It had been estimated that there was as much oil under the North Slope of Alaska as in all of Saudi Arabia!)
This discovery was covered up. The federal government ORDERED the oil company to cap it, seal it off, and keep secret all data relating to it. When Williams asked his friend why the oil companies didn't go to the American people with this information, he said that they could not afford to. So many laws and regulations had been passed by Congress that if they were to try to expose what had been done that they would be bankrupted by the federal government.
Consider this: In a modern industrial economy, When you control the oil, you control industry... and you control the people.
Folks, we have been lied to by "our" government.. and their hand-maiden, the mass media... and by those whom we have elected to Congress.
In a republic, where the business of government is done, "by the voice of the people," through our elected representatives, WE are at least partially responsible for what the government does in our name. By letting these things happen, have we been faithful to our trust?
