HOW TO IMPLEMENT A HIGH SECURITY SHELTER IN THE HOME
1996, by Joel M. Skousen. 111 pages illustrated plus plans. $25 plus
$6 s/h
CONCEPT:
This special report provides architectural plans for building a shelter
into an existing home, using do-it-yourself building techniques. You’ll
find information about new construction and poured concrete shelters
in The Secure Home, but this report deals specifically with
building a shelter in an existing basement.
Most existing homes with basements will not have enough room to pour
a new, 12-inch concrete ceiling. But using the unique techniques detailed
in this special report, you can create a ceiling with reinforced concrete
block. The finished room is a reinforced storm shelter that:
- protects your family from nature’s highest winds—tornadoes and
hurricanes.
- provides a crush-proof, reinforced shelter against earthquakes.
- serves as a concealed vault room that stores your valuables
safely and securely.
- acts as a high-security, secret hiding place if your family
faces an intruder. Various communications devices such as a telephone
can be stored within the shelter. The shelter can also contain
a concealed exit for emergencies.
- provides live-in fallout protection in case of a nuclear attack,
complete with bunk beds, water, food, cooking center, bathroom,
and filtered ventilation.

How To Fortify a Closet
HOW TO FORTIFY A CLOSET, special report by Mr. Skousen. 16 pages,
illustrated (now included as chapter 4 to the High Security Shelter
book, above cited.)
CONCEPT:
Many readers of How to Implement a High Security Shelter in the
Home found that they did not have space to build a dedicated vault
room, or that the room was too expensive for their budget. This prompted
the creation of How to Fortify a Closet, a 14-page section that contains designs and instructions on how to fortify a
bedroom walk-in closet or other closet in the home.
How to Fortify a Closet details three progressive levels of
security, including a bullet-proof option without solid masonry construction
or costly bullet-proof fabrics. Emergency escape exits, concealed
entrances, and high security doors, locks and jambs are all covered.
Even if you are building a high security vault room, you may also
want to implement a security closet into your master bedroom. This
will give you a safe room against intrusion, and provide a secure
storage area for valuables you access frequently, such as furs, jewelry,
or important papers. The closet will also help protect the items from
fire.
